Freight Index for the transportation industry rose 0.1 percent from October to November last year. The increase left the DOT’s Index at 109.5, slightly below the peak of 109.6 in September but still higher than any of the months since July 2008. The index reflects month to month changes in ton-miles carried by trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines, and air freight.
The index bottomed out at 94.3 in April 2009, and since then has risen 16.1 percent (over a 31 month period). For the first 11 months of 2011, freight shipments were up 2.4 percent year over year, showing clear signs of a bounce back in the transportation industry.
